A call for stricter regulations to curb high drug prices
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Eastern Iowans shared the pain of the high cost for prescription drugs by showing up to a town hall hosted in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday. It’s an eight-city town hall tour with Iowa being the fifth stop, at the beginning of the town hall organizers said more than 100 people showed up to talk about their experiences with prescription drug prices.
Emma Nemecek was one of the attendees and she was there to hear how others are dealing with this issue especially, since her husband’s medication costs are high.
“We’re on fixed income and I try to kind of cut down on a lot of things. Because, I don’t want him to die, you know. I want him to stay alive,” Nemecek said.
Nemecek has lived in Iowa for more than 30 years and she says her and her husband are cutting back on some of their expenses because there isn’t an alternative brand for her husband’s medication.
“All the medications that we’ve given to him are, of course, not cheap ones. We’re buying, like, $500-a-month medication for one kind of medication for his heart and we’re on fixed income. That’s $500 a month,” she said.
